Rio de Janeiro’s Super Centro Carioca de Saúde reaches 3.4 million procedures

The Super Centro Carioca de Saúde (SCCS) in the Benfica district of Rio de Janeiro has performed 3.4 million procedures—including consultations, exams and surgeries—since it opened in October 2021. Described as the most modern public‑health complex in Latin America, the centre houses the Centro Carioca do Olho, the Centro Carioca de Diagnóstico e Tratamento por Imagem and the Centro Carioca de Especialidades, together providing roughly 30 % of the city’s SUS‑regulated slots via the SISREG system.

The municipal health secretary, Rodrigo Prado, said the annual slots offered through SISREG have more than tripled, rising from 799 000 in 2020 to a projected 2.6 million in 2025, with over 12 million slots made available since 2021. The SCCS also offers high‑complexity services such as intravitreal injections, scleral‑lens dispensing, peritoneal dialysis and MRI with sedation. A second SCCS opened in Campo Grande (West Zone) in March.

Coordinator Alexandre Modesto noted that “the SCCS has moved from a mere physical structure to a strategic role in the municipal network, integrating specialties, diagnostics and care in one complex.” Plans for 2026 include expanding ophthalmology services, fully activating CCO surgical rooms, doubling the supply of glasses and opening an advanced lens laboratory.
