Rio Grande do Norte implements water supply and irrigation restrictions

Water management authorities in Rio Grande do Norte are implementing measures to address supply issues and maintenance needs.

The Companhia de Águas e Esgotos do Rio Grande do Norte (CAERN) has scheduled the cleaning of 10 treated water reservoirs between August 18 and 26. This maintenance, intended to ensure water quality and meet regulatory standards, will cause temporary water supply suspensions in the urban areas of Caicó and São Fernando. Normalization of service is expected to occur gradually throughout the period, with different regions scheduled for maintenance on various days through August 28.

Simultaneously, the Institute of Water Management (Igarn) has imposed strict restrictions on water usage in the Pataxó Canal and Pataxó River due to water scarcity. Irrigation was suspended from August 18 to August 20 to allow water to reach downstream communities, specifically Sítio Pau de Jucá and Picada. Starting August 21, a rotation system will be implemented among irrigators, alternating between the right and left sides of the canal to ensure more equitable distribution of the resource.
