Rio Grande do Norte prosecutors appeal reinstatement of convicted police officer

The Public Prosecutor's Office of Rio Grande do Norte (MPRN) has appealed to the State Court of Justice (TJRN) to overturn a preliminary injunction that allowed military police officer Pedro Inácio Araújo de Maria to return to the force.

Araújo de Maria was previously sentenced to 20 years in prison for the qualified homicide and rape of Zaira Dantas Silveira Cruz, crimes committed in a vehicle in Caicó in March 2019. Following a recommendation from the MPRN regarding the inadequacy of an initial 30-day disciplinary sentence, the Military Police General Command annulled the light penalty and ordered his expulsion from the corporation due to ethical violations and loss of professional decorum.

The MPRN argues in its appeal that administrative accountability is independent of criminal proceedings and is essential to preserve the institution's morality. The current legal battle seeks to reinstate the officer's expulsion.
