Rio Grande do Sul agriculture faces canola expansion and diesel supply challenges
Agricultural producers in Rio Grande do Sul are navigating a dual landscape of expanding crop opportunities and fuel supply challenges. Canola cultivation in the state is projected to reach 353,397 hectares in 2026, a 102.64% increase from 2025. According to Aprobio, this expansion positions canola as a vital feedstock for biodiesel production, offering a dual-purpose crop that provides both energy and animal feed.
Simultaneously, the agricultural sector is facing difficulties securing diesel due to reduced stocks and distribution limitations. Sulpetro reports that conflicts in the Middle East have pressured international diesel prices, impacting Brazil, which imports approximately 30% of its fuel. While the ANP states there is no risk of a general shortage, local farmers in Rio Grande do Sul have reported difficulties in acquiring sufficient volumes, a situation exacerbated by competition from other states seeking lower prices.
