Rio Grande do Sul grape production faces R$ 210 million loss from herbicide drift

An unprecedented study in Rio Grande do Sul estimates that herbicide drift has caused R$ 210 million in economic losses to grape production between 2018 and 2025. Conducted by ConceVitis-RS in partnership with UFRGS, the research analyzed over 400 recorded occurrences of drift affecting at least 700 hectares of vineyards.

The economic impact includes direct production losses, increased management costs, and the necessity for premature vineyard renewal. Exposure to hormonal herbicides causes leaf deformities and reduced productivity, shortening the lifespan of vines. Researchers warn that if current conditions persist, losses could exceed R$ 150 million over a five-year period. The sector is seeking better coexistence between grain and grape cultivation to prevent further damage.
