Rio Grande do Sul Assembly to reach record female representation

The Legislative Assembly of Rio Grande do Sul will reach a historic milestone in the 2027-2030 legislature, with 16 women elected to the 55 available seats. This represents 29% female representation, the highest in the institution's history since its founding in 1835.

Of the 16 women, 11 (68%) are serving their first term, while five (32%) were re-elected. The Liberal Party (PL) holds the largest female caucus with seven women, led by Adri Cherini, who received the highest number of votes in the assembly. Other parties, including PT, Psol, PSD, and PP, will each have two women represented.

Notable individual achievements include Natasha Ferreira, who will be the first trans woman in the state parliament, and Karen Santos, the only Black woman elected for the upcoming period. Luciana Genro also secured a high ranking, receiving the third-highest overall vote count.
