Rio Grande do Sul begins Festejos Farroupilhas 2026
The 2026 Festejos Farroupilhas officially commenced in Rio Grande do Sul with the lighting of the traditional Chama Crioula at the Palácio Piratini. The symbolic flame was transported to Porto Alegre from Rio Pardo, where it was originally generated on August 14.
This year's festivities hold special significance as they celebrate the 400th anniversary of the Guarani Jesuit Missions. Governor Eduardo Leite noted that the celebrations serve as a vital cultural moment that stimulates the state's cultural, tourism, and economic sectors.
Following the ceremony at the government headquarters, a group of cavalrymen led the flame through an institutional route, visiting the Legislative Assembly, the Military Brigade Headquarters, the Porto Alegre City Hall, the Civil Police Palace, and the Grand Masonic Lodge.
