Rio Grande do Sul cancels Block 1 highway concessions for 2026

Rio Grande do Sul Governor Eduardo Leite has confirmed that the concession of the Block 1 highway group will not be implemented in 2026. The proposed project included five highways: RS-020, RS-115, RS-235, RS-239, and RS-474, along with the construction of the RS-010 as an alternative route between Vale do Sinos and Porto Alegre.

The concession plan had undergone modifications, including a reduction in the number of free-flow toll gantries from 23 to 14 and a decrease in the cost per kilometer from R$ 0.21 to R$ 0.19. However, the expected bidding process for June was never launched. The proposal had faced significant local opposition, leading to the creation of a parliamentary inquiry committee (CPI) that investigated the concessions and ultimately recommended that the projects not proceed.
