Rio Grande do Sul faces severe storms and flooding risks

Rio Grande do Sul is facing severe weather conditions, including intense storms, hail, and heavy rainfall. On Sunday, the state recorded 73,300 electrical discharges in just 12 hours. The instability has already caused damage in 17 municipalities, resulting in 19 people being displaced in Turuçu, Caçapava do Sul, and Canguçu.

The National Institute of Meteorology (Inmet) has issued a red alert for 27 cities, warning that rainfall could exceed 60 mm per hour or 100 mm in a single day, raising the risk of river overflows and landslides. Additionally, the federal government has recognized a state of emergency in eight municipalities to facilitate access to relief resources.

Meteorologists warn of a persistent weather pattern that may cause high accumulated rainfall, with some areas between Uruguay and southern Rio Grande do Sul potentially receiving between 200 and 300 mm. An extratropical cyclone is also expected to form later in the week, bringing further risks of severe storms and high winds.
