Rio Grande do Sul education sector faces protests and new teacher appointments
In Rio Grande do Sul, the state government and education unions are presenting contrasting developments regarding the public school system. Governor Eduardo Leite announced the appointment of 5,800 teachers who passed public examinations to reinforce the state education network. The governor noted that the process had been delayed by legal uncertainties related to the electoral period but has since been cleared by the State Attorney General's Office. The appointments are expected to begin in the second half of the year.
Simultaneously, hundreds of active and retired educators organized a protest in Porto Alegre, marching from the Court of Justice (TJRS) to the Palácio Piratini. Led by the CPERS union, the demonstrators protested against what they described as a decade of budget cuts, salary freezes, and the erosion of public service rights. The protesters specifically criticized recent judicial decisions regarding salary irreducibility and expressed opposition to government proposals for public-private partnerships (PPPs) in state schools.
