Rio Grande do Sul environmental operation rescues over 1,000 animals

The Rio Grande do Sul Military Brigade has rescued more than 1,000 animals through 'Operação Convergência – Protetor de Biomas'. Between May and October 13, 2026, authorities rescued 819 wild animals held in illegal captivity and assisted 201 other victims of mistreatment or accidents.

The operation focuses on protecting the Pampa and Atlantic Forest biomes. In addition to animal rescues, environmental patrols identified 705.08 hectares of native vegetation suppression using satellite imagery and drones. Inspections of 815 sawmills and timber yards resulted in the seizure of 136.02 cubic meters of wood, 990 liters of pesticides, 667 rounds of ammunition, and 2,110 meters of fishing nets.

In a specific recent incident in Tramandaí, the Environmental Patrol (Patram) arrested a 54-year-old man following reports of irregularities. Officers discovered 23 native birds in unsanitary cages, including species such as trinca-ferros and canários-da-terra. The birds were later released into nature after veterinary evaluation. The investigation also uncovered illegal pig farming in an urban area, mistreated dogs, and environmental damage including tree cutting and unauthorized burning.
