Southern Brazil experiences snow and extreme cold

A strong polar air mass has brought extreme cold and winter precipitation to Southern Brazil, specifically affecting the states of Rio Grande do Sul and Santa Catarina. On Sunday, September 6, snow was confirmed in several high-altitude locations, including the Monte Negro peak in São José dos Ausentes and the Fortaleza Canyon region in Cambará do Sul.

In addition to snow, freezing rain was reported in São Francisco de Paula and Gramado. In Santa Catarina, Bom Jardim da Serra also recorded freezing rain. Temperatures dropped significantly across the region, with São Joaquim (SC) recording -1.8°C and several areas in the Santa Catarina highlands reaching as low as -1.7°C.

Meteorological agencies, including Inmet and Climatempo, have issued alerts for continued low temperatures, frost, and potential for further snowfall in the highlands through early Monday. The cold weather is accompanied by strong winds and a risk of frost, which may impact local agriculture and public health.
