Rio Grande do Sul forestry sector faces high demand and logistical hurdles
The forestry sector in Rio Grande do Sul is experiencing a period of significant contrast, characterized by high demand for certain wood types alongside major operational obstacles. According to an Emater/RS-Ascar report, heavy rainfall, poor access to cutting areas, labor shortages, and the conversion of forest areas into grain crops are the primary factors shaping the industry.
Black acacia remains a strategic resource, particularly for charcoal production, which saw price increases during the Semana Farroupilha festivities. However, excessive rainfall has damaged rural roads, complicating the transport of wood. Additionally, the sector faces rising costs due to a shortage of young labor and difficult terrain, with service outsourcing consuming approximately 60% of producer revenue.
Meanwhile, eucalyptus maintains stable demand across several regions, including Caxias do Sul, Lajeado, Passo Fundo, and Pelotas, serving purposes ranging from energy generation to construction and pole manufacturing.
