Rio Grande do Sul holds Independence Day celebrations
Independence Day celebrations are underway in Rio Grande do Sul, marked by the return of the ‘Symbolic Fire of the Homeland’ to Porto Alegre. After traveling through approximately 300 municipalities over six days, the flame was lit in front of the Municipal Palace to inaugurate the Independence Week festivities.
Mayor Sebastião Melo participated in the ceremony, stating that the spark represents the “inegotiable” sovereignty and freedom of the Brazilian people. The 89th Symbolic Fire of the Homeland Race, promoted by the Liga da Defesa Nacional do Rio Grande do Sul (LDNRS), follows a theme centered on the 400 years of the Sete Povos das Missões.
In Canoas, a civic parade is scheduled for August 30 on Avenida Farroupilha. Organized by the Municipal Education Secretariat, the event was moved forward to allow participation from the Canoas Air Base band. The parade is expected to feature approximately 2,800 students from the municipal school system.
