Rio Grande do Sul legislators debate yerba mate modernization

The Legislative Assembly is hosting a debate at Expointer regarding the creation of a State Program to Foster Innovation and Diversification of the Rio Grande do Sul Yerba Mate Productive Chain. Proposed by State Deputy Adriana Lara, the bill aims to modernize the sector by incentivizing bioeconomy, technological research, and genetic improvement.

The proposal includes the establishment of an official valuation seal to identify innovative derivative products developed in the state, such as supplements, cosmetics, and food items. Additionally, the project suggests prioritizing technical analysis for innovation projects seeking resources from the Yerba Mate Development Fund (FUNDOMATE) to increase competitiveness against modern market demands.

In conjunction with the debate, the 49th Expointer event in Esteio is also highlighting rural tourism and floriculture as methods for income diversification for farming families. According to Emater/RS-Ascar, rural tourism has become a significant driver for job creation and regional identity in the state.
