Rio Grande do Sul records 52 femicides in 2026

The Civil Police of Rio Grande do Sul have recorded 52 femicides in the state so far in 2026. While some cases remain under investigation, the current figures match the total recorded during the same period in 2025. Recent incidents include the death of an 80-year-old woman in Porto Alegre, where her son has been arrested on suspicion of femicide, and the stabbing death of a 14-year-old girl in Encantado, which resulted in the arrest of her stepfather.

In response to the high rates of violence, students at the IX Fecitec Science and Technology Fair in Estância Velha have presented research projects aimed at addressing the issue. One project focuses on the impact of misogynistic content on social media and proposes solutions such as increased educational lectures in schools and the expansion of support networks for women to report abuse.
