Rio Grande do Sul records July heat record as cold front approaches

The coastal city of Tramandaí in Rio Grande do Sul reached 34.9 °C on 18 July, the highest July temperature recorded since climatological monitoring began in 2008, eclipsing the previous record of 31.5 °C set in 2012. The heat wave extended across the Litoral Norte, with several municipalities exceeding 35 °C and Três Forquilhas hitting 37.8 °C the day before, an episode attributed to a low‑level jet channeling warm air from the north.

A cold front is expected to move through the region later in the week, bringing frequent rain and a sharp drop in temperatures. Forecasts call for rainfall accumulations of up to 70 mm in isolated spots and daytime highs between 11 °C and 22 °C across towns such as Torres, Santo Antônio da Patrulha and Mostardas, with the weather stabilising by the end of the week.
