Rio Grande do Sul records record weekly marine animal finds
The northern coast of Rio Grande do Sul has recorded a record number of marine animals found in a single week. According to the Beach Monitoring Project of the Pelotas Basin (PMP-BP), 793 individuals were documented between August 17 and August 23 on the beaches between Torres and Farol Berta in Palmares do Sul.
The weekly total consisted of 698 birds, 78 mammals, and 17 reptiles, primarily sea turtles. While the majority of the animals were found dead, 36 individuals were located alive.
August has emerged as the month with the highest number of records in 2026, with 1,221 individuals documented through August 26. Project officials noted that while there is a significant increase in monthly volume during the winter months, the current data set, which began in late 2025, is not yet sufficient to conclude if there is a definitive increase in mortality compared to previous years.
