Rio Grande do Sul reports canola harvest and livestock performance gains
Agricultural activities in Rio Grande do Sul are seeing significant developments in both crop and livestock sectors. The canola harvest has commenced across 353,397 hectares, with an estimated average productivity of 1,619 kilograms per hectare. While increased solar radiation and warmer temperatures have accelerated maturation, results remain uneven. Some regions have faced phytosanitary issues and adverse weather, including hail and wind in the Center-West and Northwest, which impacted grain development and increased losses.
In the livestock sector, a performance evaluation of 41 Corriedale sheep in Hulha Negra recorded an estimated meat production of nearly 276 kilograms per hectare. The study, conducted over 113 days, showed an average daily weight gain of up to 333 grams per animal. The evaluation, organized by the Brazilian Association of Corriedale Breeders, utilized weight gain, loin eye area, and subcutaneous fat thickness to assist breeders in selecting superior sires for herd improvement.
