Rio Grande do Sul storms cause widespread damage and fatalities
Severe storms and heavy rainfall in Rio Grande do Sul have caused widespread destruction across 155 municipalities. The state's Civil Defense reports that over 560,000 people have been affected by the weather events, with 703 people left homeless and 3,231 displaced. At least four deaths have been confirmed, including two children in Caxias do Sul and a motorcyclist in Pelotas, while one person remains missing in the Serra Gaúcha region.
Infrastructure has suffered significant damage, including hundreds of homes being flooded, roofless, or destroyed. Power outages have affected hundreds of thousands of consumers due to fallen trees and damaged electrical networks. A red alert has been issued for a high risk of flooding of the Rio Caí in Montenegro.
In response to the utility crisis, the water company Corsan has successfully restored 53 water supply systems. This recovery has reduced the number of affected municipalities from 42 to 17 and lowered the number of properties without water from 443,300 to 78,500. To mitigate ongoing issues, Corsan has installed 159 generators at priority locations to combat power interruptions caused by the storms.
