Iranduba landfill fire causes severe pollution and million-real fines
A landfill fire in Iranduba, located in the Manaus metropolitan region, has been burning for over 40 hours, covering an area of approximately 40,000 square meters. The Amazonas Military Fire Brigade (CBMAM) has deployed ten vehicles and fifteen personnel to combat the blaze, using more than 340,000 liters of water. The fire is described as complex due to its depth within the waste mass.

The State University of Amazonas (UEA) reported pollution levels reaching 153.8 µg/m³, a level classified as “very bad.” Residents have reported health issues, particularly among children, and have expressed concerns regarding the lack of protective masks.
The Amazonas Environmental Protection Institute (Ipaam) has fined the Iranduba City Hall R$ 2.505 million for atmospheric pollution caused by the open burning of waste. This follows a history of environmental irregularities at the site; Ipaam has been monitoring the landfill for at least three years. Previous penalties include a R$ 500,000 fine in 2024 and a R$ 1.5 million fine in 2026 due to recidivism and failure to implement a required area recovery plan.
