Rio Grande woman detained for allegedly setting daughter on fire

A court in Rio Grande, Rio Grande do Sul, has ordered the preventive detention of a 19-year-old woman accused of setting her 12-year-old daughter on fire. The incident occurred on a Wednesday evening in the Profilurb neighborhood.

The victim was discovered by her uncle in a bathroom with her upper body in flames. He used his jacket to extinguish the fire before emergency services arrived. The girl sustained first, second, and third-degree burns across various parts of her body, including injuries to her airways. She is currently in critical condition and remains intubated in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at a local hospital.

Prosecutors argued that the woman's release would pose a risk to the victim's physical and psychological integrity, citing the extreme gravity of the conduct and the child's vulnerability. Preliminary investigations by the Civil Police are treating the case as attempted murder. Additionally, the court has requested that the Guardianship Council evaluate the situation of the suspect's other children to determine if further protective measures are required.
