Rio Preto residents lose R$ 90,000 to fake lawyer scam

A father and son in Rio Preto, Brazil, lost approximately R$ 90,000 to a fraudulent scheme involving a fake lawyer. The victim, a 55-year-old man, was contacted via WhatsApp and phone calls by a woman posing as his attorney.

The suspect used personal information and specific details regarding a judicial process to convince the man that his retirement request had been approved. Under this deception, the father made several Pix transfers and allowed the criminals to take out unauthorized loans and use available credit limits. The son, aged 21, was also involved in the transactions, resulting in a combined loss of roughly R$ 40,000 for the father and R$ 50,000 for the son. The case has been registered as fraud with the Civil Police.
