Rio Tinto and Vale shares decline amid iron ore price volatility

Shares of major mining companies Rio Tinto and Vale have experienced recent declines, driven largely by fluctuations in the iron ore market. Rio Tinto's stock has seen a significant drop of approximately 23% since its peak in early June, a downturn attributed to falling iron ore prices. Iron ore has recently traded near a three-year low of US$90 per tonne, down from highs of US$112 per tonne in mid-May.

The decline in commodity prices is linked to weakened steel demand in China, increased global supply, and aggressive pricing negotiations. Specifically, China's state-backed buyer, China Mineral Resources Group (CMRG), has urged Chinese mills to limit iron ore deliveries from major miners to facilitate lower pricing agreements.

In recent trading, Vale's New York shares fell 2.46% to US$12.70, while Rio Tinto's shares dropped 1.41% to US$86.92. While Vale's performance was also influenced by broader market volatility in Brazil, the simultaneous decline of both companies suggests a wider sector trend tied to the iron ore market.
