Rio Tinto posts 47% profit jump in H1 2026, driven by copper growth

Rio Tinto announced a 47 % rise in first‑half 2026 net profit to US$6.7 billion, with underlying EBITDA up 28 % to US$14.8 billion and free cash flow surging 75 % to US$3.8 billion. The results were powered by an 84 % jump in copper earnings to US$5.7 billion, which now accounts for about 36 % of the group’s EBITDA. Copper production reached 442 kilotonnes in the period and the company projects 2026 output of 800‑830 kilotonnes. The miner also reported a 6 % increase in Pilbara iron‑ore production to 162.3 million tonnes, the strongest first‑half since 2018. An interim dividend of US$2.11 per share was declared, a 43 % increase over the prior year. CEO Simon Trott described the performance as a “step‑change” underpinned by a multi‑year productivity programme that has already generated US$870 million of cost‑saving benefits.
