Tomago Aluminium secures $2.5 billion government bailout

The Australian Commonwealth and New South Wales governments have announced a $2.5 billion bailout to secure the future of the Tomago Aluminium smelter near Newcastle. The agreement aims to protect over 1,000 direct jobs and thousands of indirect roles in the Hunter region beyond 2028.

Tomago, which is majority-owned by Rio Tinto, is Australia’s largest single electricity user, consuming approximately 10 per cent of New South Wales' power. The smelter has faced significant financial pressure due to rising energy costs, which account for more than 40 per cent of its operating expenses. Forecasts suggest energy contract prices could double by 2029.

Under the terms of the deal, Tomago Aluminium will enter a 10-year power purchase agreement, with electricity supply transitioning to renewable sources by 2033. Additionally, the company will invest $1.1 billion to upgrade facilities and support decarbonisation efforts. The joint investment is expected to underpin nearly three gigawatts of new renewable generation, aiding the state's transition to a low-emissions energy system.
