Rioja harvest faces challenges from accelerated maturation

The 2026 grape harvest in Rioja is facing complex conditions due to high temperatures. While the sanitary conditions of the vineyards across the Denomination are described as ‘extraordinary’, persistent heat is accelerating alcoholic maturation.

According to the fifth monitoring bulletin from the Rioja Regulatory Council, this rapid maturation is causing a decoupling between sugar concentration and phenolic maturity. High temperatures have led to increased probable alcohol levels and rising pH levels, while berry weight has seen localized decreases. Despite these challenges, phenolic maturity continues to progress favorably.
