Colombia: Two social leaders assassinated in Cauca
In the Cauca department of Colombia, social leaders James Flor and María Ovidia Palechor were assassinated in their home in La Pedregosa, Cajibío. Palechor served as a coordinator for the Women's and Human Rights programs of the Regional Indigenous Council of Cauca (CRIC), while Flor was a member of the Victims' Table. Armed individuals reportedly entered the residence and fired indiscriminately at the couple.
The NGO Indepaz reported that these killings bring the total number of community leaders violently killed in Colombia this year to 103, averaging one death every 2.3 days. The Ombudsman's Office had previously issued warnings regarding high human rights risks in the Cajibío region due to the territorial control exerted by the Jaime Martínez Front, a dissident armed group.
Separately in Antioquia, authorities confirmed the death of six-year-old Michelle Dayana Henao Chavarría, who was found in a rural area of Buriticá after being missing for a week. The Governor of Antioquia, Andrés Julián Rendón, declared three days of mourning in the department and organized a candlelight vigil to honor the child and express solidarity with her family.
