Rioprevidência to launch digital proof of life for Rio de Janeiro pensioners

Rioprevidência, the social security agency for the state of Rio de Janeiro, is implementing a digital proof of life procedure starting in October 2026. The initiative aims to modernize the process for approximately 167,000 beneficiaries, including 110,446 retirees and 56,561 pensioners.

Beneficiaries will be able to complete the requirement remotely using facial recognition via the Gov.br portal on their smartphones. To successfully validate their identity, users must have a Gov.br account with Silver or Gold security levels. The system will compare facial images against official biometric databases, such as those from the National Driver's License or the Electoral Court.

The rollout will follow a monthly schedule based on the beneficiary's birth month. The first group, consisting of approximately 13,000 individuals born in October, can perform the procedure between October 5 and November 2, 2026. This digital transition is intended to improve payroll management and prevent fraud while providing greater convenience by eliminating the need to visit physical bank branches or agencies.
