Riot Games designer addresses League of Legends gameplay staleness
Matt ‘Phroxzon’ Leung-Harrison, Lead Gameplay Designer for League of Legends at Riot Games, has acknowledged that while the game is currently balanced, the gameplay ‘might be a bit stale’ for high-skill players.
Responding to feedback from professional players, including CNG Esports mid laner Mike ‘Phantasm’ Thiele, Phroxzon noted that player satisfaction remains ‘very high’ among the general population due to the game's popularity. Consequently, Riot Games is adopting a cautious approach to updates. The developer stated that the balance changes possible before the end of the year would not be sufficient to adequately resolve the perceived staleness.
Regarding the competitive ladder, Riot is looking to implement ‘durable improvements’ for the European ranked system next season. The developer aims to address issues within the apex tiers—Master, Grandmaster, and Challenger—but intends to avoid mid-season changes to prevent further instability.
