Ripoll River fish mortality caused by sewage overflow in Sabadell

Hundreds of dead fish have appeared in a section of the Ripoll River near Sant Vicenç de Jonqueres in Sabadell. Environmental groups, including the Plataforma en Defensa del riu Ripoll and the Associació en Defensa i Estudi de la Natura (ADENC), reported the mass mortality following a suspected discharge of wastewater.

Local municipal sources indicate the incident was caused by a temporary collapse of a sewage collector system, specifically an overflow at the Sant Vicenç de Jonqueres weir. An obstruction in the sanitation system affected approximately 200 meters of the circuit, causing wastewater to bypass the collector and enter the river. Workers from Aigües Sabadell have since cleaned the system to restore normal operations, and officials state the discharge has been controlled.

Environmental advocates are demanding maximum transparency and information from the municipal government regarding the causes and consequences of the event. They are calling for a comprehensive review and update of the wastewater sanitation infrastructure to prevent similar occurrences, noting that a similar incident took place five years ago.
