Rippling launches AI spend‑control tool as firms adopt AI‑driven price discrimination

HR‑software firm Rippling introduced an AI Spend Console to monitor and cap spending on AI model tokens after internal analysis revealed that up to 40% of its R&D budget was being consumed by AI services. The company reported that a small fraction of engineers could spend as much as $50,000 a month on AI tokens, prompting negotiations with providers such as OpenAI, Anthropic and Cursor to set usage limits.

At the same time, corporations are reported to be using AI for dynamic price discrimination, tailoring prices to individual customers based on detailed profiling. A U.S. senator highlighted cases where shoppers paid up to $150 more for the same product, such as a vacuum cleaner, after AI‑driven pricing algorithms adjusted costs according to perceived purchasing power. Both developments underscore growing concerns over unchecked AI expenditures and the ethical implications of AI‑based pricing strategies.
