Colombia announces aid and subsidies for earthquake victims
Following the magnitude 7.4 earthquake on August 10, Colombian President Abelardo de la Espriella has announced a series of aid measures for affected families, particularly in Cali and the Valle del Cauca region. Direct disbursements for families with destroyed or uninhabitable homes are scheduled to begin on August 31. These households will receive a monthly subsidy of $1,050,000 for three months, totaling $3,150,000, with potential extensions for homeowners. Additionally, the Hospital Universitario San Jorge reported that the earthquake damaged 21.9% of its physical areas, valued at approximately $70,000 million, though it remains operational at 80% capacity following donations of biomedical equipment.
In the tourism sector, Anato has launched the 'Turismo Unido' campaign to support travel agencies in the five most affected departments. The association has proposed tax incentives to the national government, including reducing the VAT on air tickets from 19% to 5% to stimulate regional travel and protect tourism employment.
