Rising ADHD diagnoses among women in their 40s and 50s
An increasing number of women in their 40s and 50s are receiving ADHD diagnoses, despite the neurodevelopmental condition being present since childhood. Experts suggest that many women have historically masked their symptoms due to social conditioning to be compliant and organized.
Several factors contribute to the late detection of ADHD in this demographic. Hormonal shifts during perimenopause and menopause can intensify symptoms, while the cognitive load of increased professional and family responsibilities may exhaust previously effective coping mechanisms, such as over-organization or perfectionism.
