Rising children's shoe prices strain back-to-school budgets
Rising footwear costs are straining family budgets as children prepare for the back-to-school season. According to the Footwear Distributors and Retailers Association, shoe prices rose by 3.2% in the first half of the year. This trend puts full-year price increases on pace for the fastest growth in 34 years, excluding the pandemic years of 2021 and 2022.
Parents are facing increased pressure to balance the desire for trendy footwear with the rising costs of essentials like food and gas. Retailers and analysts note that consumers are increasingly searching for discounts, buying fewer pairs, or opting out of expensive purchases entirely. The rapid growth rate of children's feet further compounds the financial burden, as footwear is a recurring necessity that often costs more than other clothing items.
