Gaming subscription cancellations in US driven by rising costs

New data from Circana indicates that rising costs are becoming a primary driver for consumers canceling video game subscription services in the United States. According to senior analyst Mat Piscatella, over 40% of users who canceled Xbox Game Pass Essential and PlayStation Plus Essential cited price as their main reason, an increase from 37% in the first quarter of the year.

The trend is even more pronounced for Nintendo Switch Online, where 50% of recent cancelations were attributed to cost—up from 40% earlier this year. Users reported that while they still liked the service, they could no longer justify the expense within their personal budgets.

Piscatella clarified that these findings do not necessarily mean the total number of people canceling subscriptions is increasing. Instead, the motivation behind cancellations has shifted; users are now more likely to blame financial constraints rather than a lack of interesting content or a weak game catalog. This shift follows a period of price increases across the industry, affecting both gaming hardware and subscription tiers.
