Rising crude oil prices pressure petrochemical industry and global inflation

Global crude oil prices have surged, with Brent crude reaching approximately $107 per barrel and West Texas Intermediate (WTI) hitting $103.20. This spike is driven by supply disruptions in West Asia, including the closure of Saudi Arabia’s East-West pipeline, which has a capacity of about 7 million barrels per day. Increased risks in the Strait of Hormuz and Bab el-Mandeb are further contributing to a widening global oil deficit.

The rising costs are placing significant pressure on the petrochemical industry. In Indonesia, the cost of naphtha—a primary raw material for producing polyethylene (PE) and polypropylene (PP)—has reached roughly $1,000 per ton. This increase impacts the production of essential goods such as plastic containers, medical tools, and textile components.

Economists warn that sustained high oil prices will likely fuel global inflation and increase government spending on fuel subsidies. Experts suggest that businesses must re-evaluate operational costs and adopt pragmatic measures, such as increased technology use, to mitigate the impact of these rising energy and logistics costs.
