Rising electricity and gas costs threaten household budgets
The onset of colder weather coincides with rising energy costs that are expected to increase household spending in the coming months. According to estimates from Selectra, a household with a monthly electricity consumption of 250 kWh will pay approximately 14.35 euros more than a year ago.
Gas bills are also seeing significant increases. For a home with heating and a monthly consumption of roughly 1,050 kWh, costs are rising by 17.9% compared to the previous quarter. Selectra estimates that for a reference household, the monthly gas bill will increase from 65.96 to 77.76 euros.
Heating costs for the winter season are projected to be substantial. Research from Roams suggests an average expenditure of around 742 euros for gas heating and 512 euros for electric heating. The rising cost of gas may also impact electricity prices, as combined-cycle power plants use gas to generate electricity, potentially influencing wholesale prices.
