Rising electricity costs straining American household finances

A Consumer Reports survey reveals that rising electricity costs are significantly impacting American households. Approximately 68% of Americans report that home energy costs are straining their finances, with nearly one-quarter stating the impact is severe.

To manage these expenses, roughly 20% of respondents have cut back on grocery spending, while nearly one in four have adjusted heating or air conditioning to uncomfortable levels. Among residents who have lived in the same home for at least three years, 80% reported an increase in electricity bills, with 28% seeing increases between 20% and 49%.

Respondents identified utility profit motives and the expansion of data centers as primary drivers of rising rates. Schneider Electric forecasts a 16% rise in U.S. electricity demand by 2029, largely due to data center growth. To mitigate costs, experts suggest energy audits, sealing air gaps, using window insulation kits, and maintaining appliances like refrigerators and dryers to ensure peak efficiency.
