Rhine river low water levels threaten German economy
Low water levels on the Rhine river are threatening significant economic damage to the German economy. The Chamber of Industry and Commerce (IHK) for Rhineland-Palatinate has warned that the situation is critical for national logistics and industrial supply chains.
At the Kaub gauge, a vital bottleneck for freight transport, water levels have dropped below 25 centimeters, falling below the record low set in 2018. If levels at Kaub drop below 40 centimeters, inland shipping on the Middle Rhine section may become economically unviable. This disruption forces companies to divert cargo to rail or road transport, significantly increasing costs.
The impact is expected to be felt heavily in the chemical, automotive, and metalworking sectors. While investments in specialized shallow-water vessels and improved logistics have been made since the 2018 crisis—which caused approximately 2.4 billion euros in damages—experts fear the current drought could lead to similar or greater losses.
