Rising fuel and fertilizer costs threaten US farmer support for Republicans

Rising costs for fuel and fertilizer are placing significant economic pressure on American farmers, particularly in Ohio, potentially impacting support for the Republican Party in upcoming midterm elections.

During the autumn harvest season, soybean farmers are struggling to cover production costs, with expenses for diesel and fertilizer sometimes exceeding total revenues. Diesel prices used for harvesting equipment have increased by more than 67 percent since February, while the cost of certain fertilizers required for the next season has doubled. These price hikes are partly attributed to ongoing tensions in the Strait of Hormuz, a vital corridor for global energy and fertilizer trade.

Beyond immediate costs, the agricultural sector faces challenges from limited profit margins and the lingering effects of previous trade tensions with China. In rural areas, political enthusiasm for Donald Trump appears lower than in previous years, with some farmers considering abstaining from voting rather than switching party loyalty due to these economic hardships.
