Rising grocery costs drive global reductions in protein consumption
Rising grocery costs are significantly altering dietary habits in Australia and the United States. In Australia, research from MyFitnessPal indicates that 35% of surveyed individuals are purchasing less meat or protein due to cost-of-living pressures. The study also found that 75% of those surveyed estimate they consume 50g or less of protein daily, and only 33% believe they meet recommended daily fiber intake.
In the United States, specifically within South Carolina, a MarketBeat survey of over 3,000 households found that 65% have reduced the amount or type of meat, seafood, or dairy they purchase over the last year. Beef has seen the most significant reduction, with 43% of respondents identifying it as the primary protein they have cut back on. Additionally, 47% of those surveyed reported replacing beef with vegetarian protein sources, such as beans or lentils, to manage expenses.
