Rising insecurity in European capitals and top global habitability cities revealed
A long‑term analysis by Compare the Market traced perceived crime levels in European capitals from 2019 to 2025, identifying ten cities with the largest increase in insecurity. Minsk (Belarus) topped the list, followed by Thessaloniki (Greece), Lyon (France), Marseille (France), Basel (Switzerland), Stuttgart and Düsseldorf (Germany), Barcelona (Spain), Birmingham and Nottingham (United Kingdom). Marseille recorded the highest absolute concern score at 66.0 points, indicating a shift in the safety vibe that could influence urban tourism decisions.
Separately, the Economist Intelligence Unit’s Global Habitability Index 2026 ranked the five most livable cities worldwide. Copenhagen maintained its lead for a second year, with Vienna, Melbourne, Sydney and Zurich completing the top five. The index evaluates safety, health, education, environment and infrastructure, highlighting the appeal of well‑planned, secure urban environments across Europe and Australia.
