Rising living costs drive household debt in Namibia and South Africa
Rising living costs and low incomes are driving increased household debt across Southern Africa. In Namibia, the Bankers Association of Namibia (BAN) has warned of an ‘income crisis,’ noting that median monthly incomes are insufficient to cover basic expenses. This pressure has led to practices such as loan stacking, refinancing, and increased short-term borrowing. BAN Chief Executive Officer Dantagos Jimmy noted that civil servants are particularly vulnerable to over-indebtedness due to their stable salaries making them attractive to lenders.
To manage growing financial pressure, experts suggest several practical steps for consumers. Financial institutions like Standard Bank and Nedbank recommend maintaining a clear record of all debts, including interest rates and monthly installments, and prioritizing the repayment of high-interest debt. Creating a realistic budget that accounts for essentials while identifying unnecessary spending is also advised. In South Africa, the National Credit Regulator (NCR) highlights that debt counseling is available to assist over-indebted consumers in restructuring their obligations.
