Rising sea temperatures may increase hurricane frequency in Balearic Islands

Meteorological research suggests that the tropicalization of the Mediterranean could lead to more frequent and intense hurricanes in the Balearic Islands. Romualdo Romero, a researcher from the University of the Balearic Islands (UIB) Meteorology Group, noted that recent weather events have shown characteristics more similar to true tropical cyclones than traditional Mediterranean hurricanes (Medicanes).

These systems are driven by high sea surface temperatures and the release of heat between the Balearic Islands and Catalonia. Unlike typical storms, these structures can form rapidly, often making them difficult to anticipate. They feature intense wind speeds and a physical structure similar to tropical cyclones, including a central eye and powerful cloud spirals. While a potential storm system on October 3 failed to fully develop, it highlighted the increasing potential for such phenomena in the region.
