Rising sea temperatures threaten to intensify extreme weather
An international research team, through findings published by World Weather Attribution (WWA), has reported increasingly extreme sea surface temperatures in the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea. Researchers warn that these rising temperatures pose significant ecological risks to marine life and could intensify destructive regional weather events.
In the Balearic Islands, expert Biel Jordà from the IEO-CSIC Oceanographic Center noted that sea temperatures reached a maximum of 33 degrees Celsius at the Dragonera buoy in August. Of particular concern is the anomalous warming observed at depths of 20 to 25 meters, as well as unusually high nighttime temperatures. This accumulation of heat in the water could potentially fuel more intense atmospheric events, such as DANA (isolated high-altitude depression) storms, during the autumn season.
