Risk management strategies for traders

Effective risk management is essential in trading, as it is impossible to eliminate losses entirely due to market uncertainty and volatility. Instead, traders should focus on preventing individual losses from causing disproportionate damage to their accounts.

Key strategies to reduce losses include using sensible risk-reward ratios, limiting the percentage of equity risked per trade, and employing stop-loss and take-profit orders. Additionally, traders are encouraged to follow a predefined trading plan, manage leverage carefully, select reliable brokers, and continuously review their decisions to improve future performance.

Psychological discipline is also critical. Traders should avoid ‘revenge trading’—the tendency to immediately enter new trades with increased risk to recover previous losses. Accepting a loss as a normal part of the process and reviewing whether a trading plan was followed can help prevent emotional decision-making and protect overall capital.
