Risks of feeding ducks and waterfowl

Feeding ducks and other waterfowl can be harmful to the animals and their environment, leading to potential bans in many locations. While often intended as an act of kindness, human intervention can cause several ecological and biological issues.

Overpopulation caused by feeding can lead to the pollution of habitats. Excess, uneaten food can rot in the water and on banks, which may cause water quality to decline and negatively affect plants, fish, and other aquatic life. Furthermore, high concentrations of birds can lead to increased stress and physical danger for females during mating attempts.

Dietary choices also pose significant risks. Feeding birds old bread is particularly dangerous, as baked goods contain ingredients that cause digestive problems and may contain mold that makes the animals sick. Additionally, feeding causes birds to lose their natural shyness, teaching even ducklings to beg for food rather than foraging naturally.
