Rissaga sea level oscillations impact Menorca and Ibiza

The Balearic Islands, specifically Menorca and Ibiza, are experiencing 'rissagas'—meteorological phenomena causing sudden and significant sea level oscillations. In Menorca, alerts have been issued for oscillations of up to 1.2 meters, accompanied by high temperatures and risks of forest fires.

In Sant Antoni de Portmany, these sudden water level changes reached the s’Arenal beach, affecting technical and sound equipment. As a safety precaution due to the risk of electrical hazards, the local government suspended a scheduled concert for the Sant Bartomeu festivities. While some events were postponed, traditional celebrations and fireworks displays were maintained.

A rissaga, or meteotsunami, is distinguished from a traditional tsunami by its cause; it is triggered by rapid atmospheric pressure changes rather than seismic activity.
