Italy commemorates General Dalla Chiesa 44 years after mafia assassination

Italy marks the 44th anniversary of the assassination of General Carlo Alberto Dalla Chiesa, his wife Emanuela Setti Carraro, and bodyguard Domenico Russo by Cosa Nostra in Palermo. Commemorations took place in Palermo, involving political leaders, law enforcement, and citizens, including Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi and regional officials.

President Sergio Mattarella issued a statement emphasizing that the fight against the mafia must be continuous and is a fundamental condition for freedom and development. Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and Deputy Prime Minister Antonio Tajani also paid tribute, describing Dalla Chiesa as a hero of the State who fought both terrorism and organized crime.

Rita Dalla Chiesa, the General's daughter, noted that while court rulings have established responsibilities, a gap often remains between judicial truth and historical truth. The anniversary serves as a reminder of the institutional challenges faced by Dalla Chiesa during his tenure in Sicily and the ongoing need for a culture of legality.
